‘We matter too,’ say Kliptown seniors

“Things were never easy for you but you struggled to make sure that we are where we are today, we really appreciate your sacrifices for us and for South Africa and we are wishing you many more years to come. On Mandela Day, July 18, Kliptown SAPS, Pick ‘n Pay Kliptown and the Youth Crime Prevention Desk (YCPD) joined hands to make a memorable and special day for the Vuka Uzenzele Pimville Oldies in commemorating Madiba’s 100th birthday.

Items of clothing were donated and Thembi Mahape took the opportunity to donate a wheelchair to one of the senior citizens as she no longer needed it. Lunch and breakfast was served and the seniors were given an opportunity to voice their grievances to the police.

“We interacted with them and held a mini-workshop with regards to crime, reminding them of their rights as oldies,” said captain Ngwenya, Corporate Communications and Media Liaison Services for the Kliptown SAPS.

“These are our heroes, it was really an honour to spend a day with them, pampering and entertaining them. Kliptown SAPS is extremely thankful to all the elderlies and to the Vuka Uzenzele Pimville Oldies for granting us this opportunity,” he added.

The Kliptown SAPS station commander, brigadier Dalipkimar Baijnath delivered a keynote address, reminding the oldies of how important they were to the country.

Pick ‘n Pay sponsored the event with food and refreshments, the senior citizens also entertained their guests, singing and dancing for them.

Coordinated by Kidi Tshukudu, Vuka Uzenzele Pimville Oldies, consists of senior citizens from 60-years-old going up and is based in Zone Six at the Pimville Youth Centre.

“We would like to express our deepest gratitude to the Kliptown SAPS who came to commemorate Mandela Day with us. It meant a lot to the senior citizens,” said Tshukudu.
