Eldos makes the PUSH for Nelson Mandela Day

"The reason we decided to bake this big cake was because so many children have birthdays without being able to have a cake to celebrate. Poverty in our community is so dire and heartbreaking, we wanted to the children to feel special today. We did not only celebrate Nelson Mandela but the children as well, it was their birthday too" said Fisher.

Wednesday 18 July will always be a day to remember in the Eldorado Park. Many residents, business owners and organisations took time to celebrate the centenary of Nelson Mandela by giving back to the community and the PUSH centre in Extension Seven was no different.

PUSH is a registered community-based HIV/AIDS organisation that was established in May 2001 by Lorna Fisher. PUSH was established to address the community’s needs. The centre has visible and accessible treatment, information and support in order to fight against the escalating HIV/AIDS pandemic.

PUSH celebrated Tata’s birthday by baking a three-metre long cake. Enough to feed hundreds of children in the Greater Eldorado Park community. Fisher and her team at PUSH worked tirelessly to ensure the birthday celebration was a success. The team urged residents to donate baking ingredients so the big cake could be baked and ready to eat on the day.

Schoolgoers were invited to attend the celebration after school. Fisher welcomed all the children and encouraged them to be peaceful human beings, just like Nelson Mandela was, “If there is one lesson to be learned here today, it’s to be peaceful and forgiving-no matter the circumstances. Nelson Mandela will always be remembered for his peaceful and forgiving nature. He persevered and remained calm, that is so admirable. Follow in his footsteps and you will go far,” she told the children.

Amogelang Nalana (10), Leevanche James (10) and Phiwokhule Velile (10) also attended the celebration.

The children were given food, party packs and slice of cake to celebrate the big day. “The reason we decided to bake this big cake was because so many children have birthdays without being able to have a cake to celebrate. Poverty in our community is so dire and heartbreaking, we wanted to the children to feel special today. We did not only celebrate Nelson Mandela but the children as well, it was their birthday too” said Fisher.
