Not just crime fighters-They cleanup well too!
The aim of the project was to give employment to the unemployed and for the patrollers to alert the police when crime is taking place.
The Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) patrollers got their hands dirty for Mandela Day at the Riverlea Retirement Village.
“Riverlea patrollers with Langlaagte patrollers have decided to come to the Old Age Village to do our 67 minutes for Mandela Day and its something good to do in our communities, especially at the Óld Age Villages. There’s a lot of old people here and they are not able to clean. I think the old people will be very happy for the clean-up,” said Sylvia Steady, the Riverlea Extension and -Proper coordinator.
The team of thirty patrollers focused on cleaning the yard of the retirement village as well as the outside area around the property. The patrollers were all sweeping, raking, taking out weeds, picking up the dirt and placing them into black plastic bags.
According to Steady, the plastic bags and gloves were donated by the Riverlea Clinic. The library was also involved in contributing towards the plastic bags they used.
After the cleanup, the patrollers decided to get together to have a braai after a hard morning’s work. The project of having patrollers in our community came about at the beginning of the year when the Gauteng Department of Infrastructure Development EPWP decided to work closely with the police and the Department of Community Safety.
The aim of the project was to give employment to the unemployed and for the patrollers to alert the police when crime is taking place. Since then, the patrollers have been assisting the Langlaagte police with fighting crime in our area.
