ANC employee arrested in connection with cash-in-transit heist

Crime remains a serious cancer in our young democracy.

South Africa has been rocked by a number of cash-in-transit heists over the past few months. These robberies target security vans travelling on our national roads and the perpetrators, in their bid to get away with the loot, are often armed with heavy calibre weapons which they use with deadly effect.

Our roads bear the scars of the bodies of policemen and robbers who are killed after an exchange of gunfire.

Ordinary South Africans always ponder where these well-armed criminals source their weapons from, where they receive their information from and why it appears that they are tactically well trained.

These discussions have had many speculating that there might be links between law-enforcement agencies and CIT syndicates.

Four CIT heist suspects were arrested police on July 6 and 7 following a raid conducted by the  JMPD’s K9 Narcotics Unit and the SAPS in a joint operation.

The raid uncovered four vehicles, two of which were used in a robbery in Dobsonville a few weeks ago. According to reports, one of the men arrested is an ANC employee who worked at Luthuli House.

City mayor, Herman Mashaba said, “South Africa is truly in the grip of lawlessness and it is my firm belief that this is so because of the culture of impunity that has been allowed to fester by the ruling elite.”

“The arrest of this individual does bring into question whether the ANC has been aware of the arrest of this individual and, if so, why they have remained silent on such an important matter. It also begs the question of how the ANC, while running National Government, can employ individuals who so brazenly undermine public safety and the rule of law in our country.”

The ANC confirmed the arrest on Wednesday and the party’s spokesperson, Pule Mabe said that they were flummoxed that an employee had been arrested and had already appeared in court “allegedly for involvement in serious crimes.”

While the accused’s identity has been withheld, Mabe said in a statement, “Crime remains a serious cancer in our young democracy, and we must continue to fight it in whatever of its manifestations.”

“We support the efforts by the law enforcement agencies to investigate, arrest and charge perpetrators to such high priority crimes.”
