VIDEO: Metrobus driver runs for his life after protesters set bus on fire
The bus, which is certified to carry 90 passengers, was headed back to the satellite Metrobus depot in Eldorado Park when angry protesters allegedly blocked the driver's path.
A bus was set on fire by Eldorado Park and Nancefield residents last night. Residents were protesting for better service delivery when their paths crossed with the Metrobus and enraged protestors then decided to direct their frustration at the commuter vehicle.
Metrobus spokesperson Goodwill Shivuri says the double-decker bus that was torched had just been refurbished to provide commuters with a more comfortable commute.
The bus, which is certified to carry 90 passengers, was headed back to the satellite Metrobus depot in Eldorado Park when angry protesters allegedly blocked the driver’s path.
Luckily the bus was empty as the driver had just dropped off the last few passengers. According to Shivuri, the incident took place in Nancefield.
“We do understand that our people have certain frustrations about service delivery but the bus had nothing to do with the demonstration.
“It’s a sad case that people are failing to protect assets at the heart of service delivery. We are very disappointed with the conduct of the community members involved,” he said.
Shivuri said there was nothing the driver could do but to run for his life. He pleads with the City of Joburg community to protect these buses because they’re there to help ease their way of life.
