VIDEO: 60 years of marital bliss

A couple fell in love and have been married for 60 years.

They were raised in the house of God at the Ebenezer Church Clinton Memorial and that’s where this couple fell in love and have been married for 60 years.

Love led, but that does not mean they are perfect, they knew what they meant when they said ‘for better or worse’. The van Wyks attended the same school and were married at a very young age.

Maria van Wyk said they learned a lot from her in-laws and if it wasn’t for them they don’t know how they would have made it because they were very young.

“They helped us through this journey and with God in front, who can be against us?” she asked.

Being raised in a Christian family taught them the values of life and to always hold on and never to give up. Although it was difficult to raise their children because back then they used to work for little money and had to feed six children with the help of both their families, Mr and Mrs van Wyk let love lead their future.

The couple is now a living example that love does exist. Maria said as a family they always discuss their problems and pray while trying to look for solutions.

“We often try hard to help each other, that includes our grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Our children are always grateful to us because they always tell us that if it wasn’t for us, they don’t know where they would be,” she added.

Maria said people should never forget where they come from or the people who made it possible for them and always remember to put God first. She urged young couples to seek comfort and shelter in the word of God.

“Take all your problems to him and find your shelter, God will never leave. When you raise your children, you also raise the generation coming after them,” she explained.

They also advise their children and their in-laws about marriage. According to the van Wyks, there was no time when they thought about divorce because back then, there was no such thing as divorce. She said they meant it when they said for better and for worse.

The van Wyks said it’s sad that most couples divorce after being married for only a few years. Back then they only knew that people were husband and wife, no matter what.

“It’s heartbreaking and sad to see how people are considering divorce as a solution. We ourselves have disagreements but we believe that we must learn to forgive,” they said.

The couple believes that there is no perfect marriage, but children nowadays can’t hold on because the wife earns a higher income and feels they don’t need a man simply because they can maintain themselves.
