Dare2Read’s pre-Mandela Day contribution

Giving more than 67 minutes for Mandela Day

Dare2Read SA (D2R), founded by Natalie Goodman visited the House of Hope in Riverlea with some stakeholders.

House of Hope is a house of safety for children in the Riverlea area, the organisation was established by Comfort Ramuhulu six years ago.

Currently the youngest child is an eight month old baby and the eldest is a 18 year old who are all in Ramuhulu’s care.
Faeeza Davids, Lucinda Pietersen -the current Mrs Africa, Marinda and Ben Fivaz were all part of the team who visited the home and brought a little joy to the lives of the children.

D2R turned four years old last week and brought their cake with to House of Hope to share with stakeholders and the kids at the home.

According to the projects manager of Dare2Read, Fabian Sass, the pre-Mandela Day visit was to hand over blankets to the home which was donated by stakeholders and to raise awareness of the needs at House of Hope.

On Mandela Day the team will return to the home and they will be painting a room in the house in order to build a mini library for the children.

“We live in a society that has a low literacy rate and last year our country was placed last out of fifty countries in literacy.

“Children need to learn to read between Grade 1 and Grade 3 but you find that they still struggling to read in Grade 4 that’s why D2R came in to assist with reading in our community,” said Sass.

The team plans on giving more than the 67 minutes for Mandela Day and will work on completing the mini library for the children and contributing to the home in other ways too.
