Oupa Mofokeng (42) woke up to a house on fire Bramfischerville June 23. His backyard tenants, who saw flames engulfing the house at 4.30 am in the morning, alerted neighbours to the danger he was facing.

Neighbour Palesa Rankudu (27), reacted to the screams and blew a whistle to awaken the sleeping residents of Bramfischerville. They came out in large numbers and helped Mofokeng to extinguish the blaze.

Rankudu said,”The fire brigade officials were also called to help and together they succeeded in extinguishing the fire.

“It was unfortunate that the roof and furniture were burnt by the time they managed to bring the inferno under control. He also sustained burns to his legs and was rushed to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital to receive treatment.”

The roof collapsed in Mofokeng lost a number of valuables in the fire. He is currently recovering from his wounds in hospital. Neighbours assembled at the victim’s house the following day and started renovating Mofokeng’s house.

“We have already repaired the caved in asbestos roof. Residents donated building material from the community. We have also plastered and painted the wall.

“Bramfischerville residents also donated a bed, blankets, doors and window frames for Mofokeng. We have done all these renovation and repairs while he is still recovering in hospital,” said neighbour, Desmond Myeki.

He said they wanted to ease the financial strain on their neighbour. Myeki said they are still accepting other donations coming from neighbours because Mofokeng lost all his belongings in the fire.

Residents do not know when he will be discharged from the hospital, but they want to put a smile on his face when he returns to his home.
