Family home up in flames

"On June 19, I wasn't able to go and write my exams since all my books were burnt in the fire" - Koketso Dlamini.

Winter has hit our shores and the change in weather brings with it blistering cold. People living in the informal settlements dotted around our townships are always hardest hit as everyone devises means to keep warm.

Everyone wants to stay warm indoors and in many instances, we end up endangering our lives and increasing the chances of fire as we leave heating appliances on.

The Dlamini family home was gutted in a fire on June 18. According to neighbours, the fire started at about 7.30 pm and quickly spread, endangering the lives of the occupants.

Koketso Dlamini explained what transpired after their furniture, clothes and identity documents were consumed in the blaze which engulfed their home.

“The fire started in my bedroom where my child was. The heater exploded and that’s how the fire started spreading, luckily my child called my grandfather and they were able to escape without unharmed,” said Dlamini.

Neighbours, friends and onlookers by were able to help in time as they fought the blaze. Dlamini, who lives with her grandparents, mother and child managed to extinguish the fire with the help of neighbours who assisted the family in bringing the inferno under control.

The family are still coming to terms with the incident and are left having to replace some of the furniture which was consumed by the fire.

They are agreed that this will be a difficult undertaking and Koketso said, “We are appealing to the community to please help us with anything because I am still a student and no one is working.

“We all depend on my grandparents’ support grants. I would like to thank the community for helping us save the house and with God’s grace no one was injured,” she said.
