I-Matter is a mentorship program designed to empower and uplift teenage girls.

I-Matter is a mentorship program designed to empower and uplift teenage girls’ specifically those who have suffered emotional trauma, social difficulties, and dysfunctional family. On June 23, I-Matter held an event at Donaldson Senior Primary School in Jabavu.

It aims to be a voice for the voiceless, wants to see this program expanding throughout Soweto and inspiring other communities to have such programs in order for young girls to find hope and believe in themselves.

Young girls were encouraged that they matter without them changing their skin colour or thinking if they were in a certain “way” the society will accept them or fit in.

The theme of the day “Dare to dream and dream in colour” which simply means young girls should dream big, that their dreams and aspirations are enough and they have to see themselves beyond the stereotypes and perception.

“We help them to express their voice, opinions and need. We inspire them to be bold, smart and confident. If your mind can conceive it then you can achieve it and nothing can stand in your way. I want to help them break out of the cocoons that contain them to limited possibilities,” said Philani Nyalunga Founder.

Keynote Speaker Fikile Ndlebe stated that when she grew up, she didn’t have self-confidence, shy and never believed in herself. She encouraged girls to take such programs serious because this will mould them to become a better person.

She told the teenagers that they are beautiful the way there are, you need to love and accept who you are. Self-confidence is not about being bold and speaking up but its self-acceptance.

Ndlebe encouraged them to have I can do it spirit and that in order to have this spirit they need two things namely; Decide to be successful and you must be willing to work hard.

Hard work doesn’t start when you are in matric but you need to start now. Believe in yourself, be bold and confidence and nothing comes easy in life. I’m s girl, I’m smart, and I can do anything.”

Guest speaker Keneilwe Sebola said, “You and I matter, the surrounding and background doesn’t matter. You must fight and you have to speak up.

“We want to hear your voice. What you study, wouldn’t grant you money but study for your passion. You are beautiful just the way you are and your goals should be passion-driven,” emphasized Sebola.
