Consumers have to tighten their belts due to yet another petrol price hike

Petrol price hike to hit consumers hard.

Motorists across South Africa are set to see yet another petrol price increase following the recent increase only a few weeks ago.

Petrol is currently priced at R 15.54 per litre on average but after the petrol increase consumers will be paying just over R16.00 per litre- this is the highest price hike the country has ever seen.

According to Paul Makube, a senior agricultural economist at FNB, poorer consumers will be affected the most as daily transport fees will increase.

Those who own cars have opted for using public transport but with transport fees set to increase, they don’t think they’ll be saving money anything at all.

“I have a car but it’s parked in my yard because petrol has become too expensive. I decided to start using public transport but those fees will increase so I’ll end up not saving anything,” said Lauren Fisher, an Eldorado Park, Extension Three resident.

Shaun Davids, from Extension Four, added that scary times are ahead.

“I recently started working but the cost of living is so high, I am barely making ends meet, no matter how hard I try. This petrol hike feels like a stab in my gut, the financial strain is too much. We simply cannot afford it,” he said.

Vincent Ngobeni, a petrol attendant at the Engen filling station in Devland said that car owners rarely fill up their tanks without complaining.

“I fill up people’s cars everyday but when they’re about to pay, almost all of them frown. The cost of living is high, scary times are ahead,” he said.

Petrol prices are set to increase across the country in early July.
