Aunty Florence dishing up for children, ensuring their tummies are filled this Winter.
According to Florence Steenkamp who is known in the community as ‘Aunty Florence’, hundreds of children in Eldorado Park go without food on a daily basis.
“The thought of children not having a basic plate of food makes me so sad, that is why I decided to start a feeding scheme.
“Children are growing every day and need to eat in order to reach certain milestones,” said Steenkamp.
Aunty Florence said that the school holidays are her busiest days because children come knocking on her door for a plate of food at any time of the day.
She cooks and dishes up for the children on a weekly basis and make sure they have a snack to leave with when going home. Last week, Aunty Florence dished up for over 100 children who came to her home hungry.
“All of these children are my babies and I cook for them because I want to, I do it out of the goodness of my heart, my babies need to eat. When my yard is full of children, my heart is full as well,” she said.
All the children were treated to a warm plate of food but in order to sustain the feeding scheme, especially during the school holidays, Aunty Florence appeals to the Eldorado Park community to help her to continue feeding the children.
“I would appreciate any kind of donation, it doesn’t have to be money but the basics like rice, mealie meal and vegetables are needed,” she said.
