WATCH: Drug problem in Eldorado Park seems to be never-ending

Anyone who needs more information or who is willing to start the recovery process is advised to contact EldosFM as they have a list of numbers of all stakeholders who are involved.

The drug problem in Eldorado Park seems to be never-ending and indications are that the drug pandemic is on the rise. Just last week, the Eldorado Park police recovered a huge drug stash in an Extension Nine residence.

A total of 554 Mandrax tablets and six bags of Mandrax powder was found at the house.

Dereleen James noted anti-drug activist said in a statement that the drug problem in the community is only getting worse and that there was a direct correlation between the crime in Eldos and the number of substance abusers.

June 26 was the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

“The day is important because so many people-young and old-are affected directly or indirectly by drugs,” said Cheryl Pillay, the Eldorado Park Local Drug Action Committee chairperson. One day for awareness is not enough, we cannot do justice in one day.

“That is why we decided to make drug awareness a week-long event, but even that is still not enough,” Pillay said.

The theme for this year’s campaign is #recoveryispossible and was led by ex-drug users who managed to get through the recovery process successfully.

“Most of the people who here with us today are all ex-addicts and because most people in the community know them, the people who are still using will see that is possible to rid themselves of drugs.

“The campaign is taking a message of hope out there to encourage people to stop using. The people here today are living testimonies that recovery is possible,” said Pillay.

The week’s activities consisted of peaceful marches through the streets of Eldorado Park, door-to-door to visits in Kersie Dorp Extension Nine and interactions with the communities in extensions One, Four, Eight and Nine.

“We chose to do interactions in these specific extensions because they are known to be problem areas in Eldorado Park,” said Pillay.

The week-long campaign was not limited to Eldorado Park but Ennerdale and Westbury as well.

Anyone who needs more information or who is willing to start the recovery process is advised to contact EldosFM as they have a list of numbers of all stakeholders who are involved.

“They can also give me a call or send me a message, I am available to help,” said Pillay. She can be contacted on 061 410 1734.
