Klipspruit West celebrates Youth Month

Celebrating Youth Month in the West.

Ronelle Patrick and Fabian Slinger work closely with the Klipspruit youth and hope to inspire and encourage them to always stay on the right path.

The two organised a mini Youth Day soccer tournament on June 16 in order for the community to celebrate this important day together. The initiative was started in hopes to bring residents together and to remind the youth that they are important in their own right.

Patrick said, “The aim of this tournament was for Klipspruit children to come together and have a nice time, I was surprised by the support we received from parents.

The day turned out to be really successful and I am happy about that.” Boys and girls competed in the tournament and the winning teams received trophies for their efforts.

The girls were not left out and showed their footer skills.

According to Patrick, the Klipspruit West community is dealing with many social ills, with substance abuse topping the list. “With events like this we are trying to teach our children right from wrong and we are trying to show them that there can be good in our community.

“Physical activities like these keep our children off the streets, so we plan to do more. As a community, we need to stand together and help our children to stay off the street,” she said.

Fabian Slinger, who is a football coach in the area said that the event turned out to be more than he could ever hope for.

He said, “We initially planned to host only 120 children but so many more turned up today. I am very happy with the contributions that were made.

The children had fun and for me, that was very important. Everyone has inherent dignity, and the right to have their dignity respected and protected is the most important.”

He added that there was a great desire for soccer to take off in the community and that one of the goals he set for himself was to take these boys to a professional level. Going forward, Slinger plans to focus on the positives that Klipspruit has to offer.

Ronelle and Fabian are thankful to the Koec centre in Klipspruit West who supplied the food on the day.

“Chris Isaacs, who most people know as ‘Oom Kappie’, supplied the medals, we want to thank him for always pulling through for us,” said Ronelle.
