Haircuts meet the #Achuu effect

Chappie started his brand #Achuu as a dance move, which was inspired by his grandmother and late aunt.

As most young people are still struggling to get employment even after completing their studies, some have taken the initiative to take risks and become entrepreneurs.

Thabang Chappie, popularly known as Chappies from Mapetla, is one of those who took the leap of faith and turned his passion into a business. Chappie started his brand #Achuu as a dance move, which was inspired by his grandmother and late aunt.

He says they would say this whenever they heard their favourite songs played on the radio, and he decided to use it to stand out from the other local dancers. He then started working on his look and was later known for his unique haircuts which he took to social media.

This platform helped him get customers, especially his peers and this is when he started making a business out of his love for extraordinary haircut designs and hair art in 2008.

“I only started by washing client’s hair until I worked my way up and became the best”, said Chappie. He started the Achuu Pop-Up Barbershop with business partner Bagcina Dhlamini known as Perhaps and is now also renting out space to other hair stylists who have the same passion of the art of hair.

“Our main focus is to do completely different haircut styles. We try to be innovative and add a bit of that Achuu effect to keep it fresh”, said Chappie.

The barbershop is known for their artistic designs, fades, line-ups and beard-cutting and shaping. Chappie says he has received great support from the community.

He further mentioned that is not as easy as he always has to think of new designs. Though not every client is willing to experiment and allow him to be creative on their heads, the young clientele is always excited to see his new designs.

The Achuu brand is not about hair only, but it has grown into a clothing label as well. He also has a website which gives people more information about his work and also allows them to make bookings and to order clothing items online.

“I enjoy my work because I love the style. I never thought it would take me this far, but I hope it inspires other people to stop waiting for job vacancies to be advertised, but to create their own empires”, said Chappie.
