MOTIVATION: “We stayed in a one-roomed house for 7 years” – Phiri

Success is doable.

Martin Phiri (21) from Bramfischerville believes that a person’s financial circumstances should not be used as a determining factor in their future and said that hard work was the only road to success in life.

He considers himself as somewhat of an authority on rising above your circumstances because he ìs from a poverty-stricken background and he has soared above his poor upbringing.

“We stayed in a one-roomed house in Princes for seven years. The only privacy afforded to my parents was a curtain dividing the room.

“My mother was a domestic worker and my father was a petrol attendant. There were times when my mother used her entire salary to pay for my school fees which proved that her salary was not enough,” said Phiri.

It is because of this poor upbringing that Phiri hosts motivational seminars at local schools to inspire learners facing the same challenges and bring home to them that they too, can overcome poverty.

He said that objective of the motivational seminars was to remind pupils that their situations were not permanent and they can also turn their fortunes around in the same way he did.

Despite his busy schedule, he is also studying towards a civil engineering diploma, trades in cryptocurrency and owns an internet café.

He said their parents continued to shower his sister and himself with love, despite their financial situation.

According to Phiri, he was excited that after many years without a place to call home, his parents now own one in Bramfischerville.

He said their life of hopping from one house to another has become a thing of the past.

“The central message I’m delivering in my workshop seminars is that everyone can be a success either in school, in business or as call centre agents.

“Success is doable but people must learn to work hard, be persistent and put in the extra hours needed to move forward. A person’s background doesn’t define who they are in life,” said Phiri.
