Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane is worried about the increase rate in the number of road crashes in the province.
This past weekend alone the province recorded 25 fatalities on the roads. The law enforcement agencies had to contend with various operational difficulties such as drunk and driving, reckless and negligent driving behaviour.
In Ekurhuleni region, there were notable double fatalities on the R554 and Aucamp in Dawn Park area. A 33-year-old and 17-year-old passenger died when the Fiat Uno they were driving in got involved in an accident with a Hyundai i20 vehicle yesterday.
In another accident last night, two pedestrians about 45 years of ages including the 55-year-old driver died when he crashed on them.
On the R59, a Toyota Corolla travelling towards the south just a few meters before R42 Vanderbijlpark crashed into two pedestrians who were attempting to cross the freeway.
In Tembisa Hospital View, two passengers died when a white Audi A3 and a white VW Golf collided. The two drivers and another two passengers were slightly injured and taken to Tembisa Hospital. Both accidents took place last night.
“I am deeply worried by the ongoing rate of road crashes in our province. Our road safety efforts and practices continue to be ignored by some drivers which result in the death of many innocent citizens. Too often, drivers and passengers do not buckle up which result in many losing their lives when involved in an accident.
“Excessive speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol have also been found to be the most contributing factors to these crashes.
“Again passengers walking on our busy freeways are also a major concern, they normally do not have reflective clothing which makes it difficult for the drivers to see them and result in many deaths.
“The Gauteng government will intensify the road safety education programmes in reducing road crashes within our roads. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who lost their loved ones during the past weekend and wish those who are injured a speedy recovery. We call upon all drivers to continue to observe the rules of the road to avoid further road crashes,” said Nkosi-Malobane.
