Frederic Place is a registered non-profit organisation (NPO) which caters to the needs of elderly and destitute people. The organisation was originally in 1978 has become the safe haven for the aged.
Frederic Place is one of the few homes in our city which provides residential care and other aligned services to the aged persons who cannot pay and access essential services.
The facility takes in residents who are 60 years old and older. Currently, the home has 85 residents and of the 85 they accommodate and care for 22 frail care residents who are dependent on caregivers for eating, bathing and medical attention.
We visited the home and spoke to the general manager Berni Gaffney who then took us on a tour around the premises. Gaffney explained that although they receive 90 percent of the pension money and other funds, they are still battling with the lack of income.
Incontinent Adult Nappies seem to be one of the biggest liabilities of the organisation as nappies are very expensive and the residents use up to three a day.
According to Gaffney, they have two vehicles that also need to be well serviced as residents need to be transported to the clinics and hospitals.
The organisation has many generous people coming in to assist but as Gaffney said that they still fail to meet operational costs. The general manager said that they need residents and companies to assist with furniture even if its second hand, as long as it’s in good condition.
