Bogus City of Johannesburg officials scam unwitting homeowners

Residents warned about bogus officials.

Recently, the City of Johannesburg (COJ) has become aware of bogus officials targeting communities. The COJ would like to warn all its customers to be aware of people who pretend to be City Power and Johannesburg Water officials.

These fake officials have access to the COJ uniform as well and produce identity cards in order to get into residents’ homes to collect money and commit other crimes.

The COJ wants to reiterate the fact they do not do door-to-door visits to collect payment for any outstanding bills. All residents are urged to make any payments only at COJ walk-in centres and should not leave the centre without a receipt in case of any issues in the future.

“If one is in arrears or struggling to make payment, they should approach the municipality and they should not, under any circumstances, make payment to officials who show up at their doors,” said Mshiwa Sibande, the assistant director of the COJ.

He added that residents should ignore all threats made by these officials. Some officials threaten to switch of water and electricity supplies. If your water or electricity is tampered with, report to the municipality immediately.

To report any suspicious activity, contact the City’s Group Forensic and Investigation Service Department investigators.

Their contact details are as follows: Mshiwa Sibande 081 301 4341 / Phuti Ramara 083 628 3576 / Masena Lebea 062 913 3997 / Nkosiyabo Mbatha 082 467 9567.
