VIDEO: Father of Stanton who was shot in the head in Westbury speaks

20-year-old gets shot in Westbury.

Stanton Nobles, a 20-year-old from Westbury was shot in the head at Abel flats on June 4 at about 7 pm. During an interview with his father Donovan Nobles, Stanton was in an induced coma at a local hospital.

“Things are getting worse, this morning I went to the police station and they don’t even know what’s happening, so we are just wasting our time.

“People say there was a guy at the Steven Pienaar Tournament who threatened my son saying that ‘we going to take you out’, but the point is, we do not know what really happened because every person is coming with a different story,” explained the father.

Donovan explained that he was walking home when he heard the gunshots but because this has become predictable in the area – he did not pay much attention to it.

It was when he got into the flat when people gave him the news about his son. From what the father understood, his son was standing and chatting with friends when a man approached them and said to his son ‘oh! here you are’, seconds after that, Stanton walked around the corner with the man and it was then when they heard the two gunshots going off.

According to Donovan, the shooter then ran away but remains sceptical because it seems as though the friends, as well as his son, knew the man with the gun.

“Once this starts, it starts and what really perturbs me is that its adults in our communities that encourage these things. People know who the drug dealers are in the community but when the police come, they conceal the identity of these dealers. Tomorrow comes and it happens to your child then it’s a big deal,” he cried.

The father said a case of attempted murder has been opened at the Sophiatown Police Station.

Sadly, he recalls that on the night of the shooting, there were many people in the area talking about what changes need to be made and even that did not faze him because ‘things get said and nothing gets done’.

“When I got to the scene, they had already put him in a car, ready to take him to the hospital. I went with them to the hospital and the doctors there told us that if we didn’t bring him at that moment, he would’ve died.

“There are two bullet holes in his skull. One bullet went through his head and the other is now stuck in his head. The neurosurgeons told us they have to make a hole in his head to drain all the pus. As it stands, they cannot remove the bullet because it will cause further damage to his brain.

“So, the family just has to accept the situation. Doctors said they’ll keep him at the hospital for a week or two,” said Donovan.

Yesterday, when the dad went to the hospital with a pastor to pray for his son, after the prayer, his son opened his eyes and then closed them again.

“My son is a lekker laaitie, it’s just when you hang out with the wrong crowd, it’s a real problem,” said Nobles.

Paul Dajee, a neighbour and concerned resident from Westbury said, “this issue needs to be resolved urgently. I also have children and cannot imagine the pain that the parents go through. Our people need to stand up, we cannot rely on the police alone,” he said.
