Soweto Hotel shows students how it’s done
“We have been learning how to make good food and the catering industry as a whole but in this case we got the first-hand experience of how everything that we have been learning about works."
The catering class from Emndeni Skills Development Centre visited the Soweto Hotel last Monday as part of their work induction programme. The trip included a grand tour of the hotel where they got to experience the ins and outs of the place and an understanding of how the industry works.
The focus of the induction was in order for them to gain first hand experience of how the kitchen is operated and the possible prospects they may have once they have completed their course. They also got an understand of how the different departments of the hotel are linked and how to work as a unit.
During the kitchen visit, the students got the opportunity to ask the head chef some questions on operations and their possible job descriptions.
“The duty of an assistant chef is basically to prepare the food so that it can be cooked and this often includes peeling and so on.
“I would advise that you start by registering under the South African Chef’s Association and you can take it from there because you will be recognised and you can be referred to a fitting job for your qualification,” said chef Letlhogonolo Monnatlala.
Busisiwe Mposula, a student at the centre, summed up the experience, “We have been learning how to make good food and the catering industry as a whole but in this case we got the first-hand experience of how everything that we have been learning about works.”
“We also learnt about other things such as what really goes on in the kitchen and about how we are expected to dress, how to maintain hygiene, how to keep our hair and generally how to operate a kitchen” said , a student at the centre.
