Seniors embracing their African culture in Coronationville

The month of May is a celebration of what it means to be African to deepen and expand our knowledge, engage in cultural exchanges and sharpen our ideas, but also to come together as one.

Senior citizens from all regions gathered at the Coronationville Recreation Centre for the Johannesburg Older Persons Forum (JOPF) King and Queen 2018, on May 25. The seniors had so much fun while they waited for the end results of the contest. They started dancing in between rows in their African attire.

The month of May is Africa Month and May 25 marked Africa Day. In the spirit of the day, people all around our community wore traditional wear and some just added some African prints to their clothing. Beads and African prints were worn right through the weekend of May 25.

Lucy Makgolo, Nthabiseng Nthabane, Mantoa Moeti, Pulseletso Konkonyane, Hazel Myezo, Elizabeth Dube, Dorus Radebe and Martha Nkoma, all senior ladies from Region B and proud to be from Alexandra township, represented their cultures well as they danced the floors of the Coronationville Recreation Centre.

The ladies were proud to showcase what cultures they are from and when it came to taking photos they were more than welcome to model in their beautiful African attire. Many in our community only noticed the African wear as they were unaware of what the day stood for, some only had knowledge of it because they had to dress up at work while others just went about their day in their everyday work wear.

May was declared Africa Month by the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) on May 25 in 1963. The Department of Arts and Culture sees the month as a celebration of what it means to be African to deepen and expand our knowledge, engage in cultural exchanges and sharpen our ideas, but also to come together as one.
