Seniors making a difference in Klipspruit West

Seniors are not content with spending their golden years sitting at home and use senior citizen clubs to interact with the community by taking the lead in being part of positive initiatives.

The Jewels Senior Citizen Club (JSCC) was established and launched in April last year. The club started off with only six members and has grown to having over 30 members to date, of which five are relatively young and do most of the “running work” for the elderly.

Club members get together at least once a week at the Klipspruit West Library hall and have conducted many successful projects. Chairperson Barry Makue said, “The elderly in this club are very talented, we make all kinds of jewelry and embroidery. This winter we will be working on making pyjamas to keep warm.

The club leaders are involved in assisting the elderly in all social matters. “We make sure the seniors in our club are accompanied when they go SASSA offices and so on. We are against the abuse of the elderly and we want to ensure that our senior citizens are safe and well taken care of,” said Makue. JSCC forms part of the Greater Eldorado Park Senior Citizen’s Forum.
