Woman gunned down by live-in partner in Mofolo

Residents alerted police officers on patrol in the area about the shooting.

A 39-year-old White City woman was shot and killed by her partner who allegedly pulled her out of a taxi in Machaba Street in Mofolo this morning.

According to Johannesburg Metro Police (JMPD) spokesperson Wayne Minnaar, the police were patrolling at Motsoaledi road around 7.30 am when residents alerted them to the murder.

When they arrived on the scene, police found the lifeless body of a woman lying on the side of the road. Further investigation revealed that she had been shot multiple times.

Eyewitnesses confirmed the woman had been shot after an altercation broke out between her and her partner. Her uncle, who was with the woman at the time of the incident, was shot in the leg during the argument between the two.

Police launched a manhunt for the gunman which led them to Emndeni in Soweto and found him in possession of an unlicensed firearm believed to have been used during the shooting. The 42-year-old gunman is believed to have been the slain woman’s partner.

Minnaar said, “I cannot confirm if she was dragged from the taxi, or whether she was on her way to board the taxi when she was shot.”

He added, “The attacker has been arrested and is being held at the Moroka Police Station”.

According to captain Mavela Masondo, the gun-wielding man was arrested and will be appearing before the Protea Magistrate Court to face charges of murder, attempted murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
