Residents warned to stay clear of alien invasive plant

Is this invader lurking in your garden?

May is Biodiversity Awareness Month and, according to the EnvironMentorz, a plant has been discovered growing at the Eldorado Park Stadium, which is harmful to residents.

The EnvironMentorz is a non-profit environmental development organisation based in the heart of Eldorado Park which was founded two years ago after environment deterioration was confirmed in Eldorado Park.

They want to provide the community with environmental education, awareness, skills development training and training in conservation.

The plant which was discovered is known as the Solanum Mauritianum or more commonly, the Bugweed (Lusiboom) which is a category one invasive plant according to the agricultural Resource Act no. 43 of 1983, and should be controlled immediately.

It is a thornless tree with older stems covered with white velvet-like hair. The Bugweed has large leaves which are dull green and has a velvety texture on the surface. When the leaves are crushed or tampered with, a strong, foul-smelling odour is released.

The leaves produce berry-like fruits that appear green when in the initial growing process and turn a bright-yellow when the fruit has matured.

The species of tree produces lavender flowers.

The flowers that are produced are lavender in colour and grow in compact clusters at the end of the branches. The hairy leaves and stems can cause skin allergies and the enzymes released from the tree can cause lung irritation and can worsen asthma.

“It is a highly invasive plant and inhabits the growth of natural vegetation, it grows in many residential gardens and sidewalks,” said Kaylene Jegels, who is an environmentalist.

The Environmentorz are urging residents to contact them should they need help with removing the invasive plant. Protective clothing needs to be worn when removing the tree.

The team are based at 1914 Cumming Road, Eldorado Park Sports Stadium, Extension Nine.
