A street vendor with a taste for fashion

Dress the way you want to be addressed.

In every community, we have that one or two street vendors in which everyone knows and loves. Whether they selling fat cakes, mielies, ouma tande, cooldrinks, apple munch or fruits and vegetables, it is always their unique personality which keeps the customers coming back for more.

On Wright Street in Industria, there is only one street vendor who knows how to keep his customers coming back.

We are talking about Emmanuel Phacule who has been working in Wright Street since 2009. Phacule has a unique dress code which can stop just about anyone just to get a glance at “what’s he wearing today.”

From smart suits to military-inspired wear Phacule is quite the fashionista who even out dresses big managers in companies.

Although Phacule admits that he hasn’t always dressed like this but the Maputo born vendor explained that it was only since 2016 when his wardrobe changed.

When asked who inspires his dress code he simply said that it is his wife who inspires his look and also said that she chooses his outfits from time to time.

When it comes to business Phacule said that business is business, some days he has a lot of customers and some days he doesn’t but he is grateful to his regular customers who support his business on a daily basis.

Phacule mentioned that when he started selling, he only started off with a few packets of crisp and when he was on the verge of giving up, he had loyal customers who encouraged him and told him to stay. Its been nine years since and Phacule is still running his business successfully.

During his photo shoot, one of his regular customers said that Phacule is a lovely guy with a great personality and that they happy to have him there because he makes sure that they keep healthy with at least a fresh fruit or two a day.

Phacule currently lives in Meadowlands, Soweto and said that he has seen a change in how people treat him and it only comes when you dress smartly. He said that they treat you with love and respect, so maybe the saying ‘dress the way you want to be addressed’ is true after all.
