”Keeping God’s children safe” – Catholic Schools Week

Catholic Schools Week.

If you drove or walked past the St Theresa Convent School on Fuel Road on May 8, then you would have noticed the picketing of children in the schoolyard. It was Catholic Schools week from May 6 to May 11 and the theme this year was ‘keeping God’s children safe’.

Head of Department for the foundation phase Nicole van Buuren explained what the whole picketing was about.

“We doing a whole campaign that we have to keep our children safe, the children all know a song which is called “this is my body”.

In the song the children sing about their bodies and that no one can hurt them or touch them.

“We’ve been out here since this morning at 7; 30 am. The children had to make posters and then we had each grade come out for a half an hour to do some campaigning. We got hoots, waves and shouts,” said van Buuren.

According to van Buuren, the campaign only ran for the day but on May 9 they had a priest from the Bosmont Catholic Church to have a talk on child safety and how they must keep themselves safe.

“We also have appreciation day where we appreciate our teachers and children and on Friday we going to try and do a human rosary with our small ones and then they will be doing the ‘my body’ dance and singing the song as well,” said van Buuren.

The whole school was involved in the campaigning and ensured that everybody is and will be safe.

St Theresa Convent School in Coronationville was the pilot school who had to put the dance moves together for the ‘My Body’ song and it went viral on Facebook with over 1000 views.

The school is proud to see how many people are following their campaign and the little ones on the day were just too excited to campaign for their right to be safe.
