Celebrating all things African

May 25 is Africa Day.

Africa Day, which falls on May 25, is upon us. This day is used to commemorate the formation of the Organisation of African Unity in 1963 and is usually celebrated by wearing traditional attire and indulging in traditional cuisine.

The Organisation of African Unity (OAU) has since been renamed the African Union (AU). The OAU was formed in a meeting held in Ethiopia’s capital city, Addis Ababa. Ethiopia is one of two countries in Africa that were never colonised.

Ethiopians living in South Africa can celebrate Africa day by indulging in Ethiopian cuisine, which is popular in Johannesburg according to one of the owners of an Ethiopian restaurant in Maboneng.

“Everything in Ethiopia is still so traditional, even the calendar we use is different from the Western one. Our culture has been well preserved,” said Dr Eden Bonger, daughter of the Bonger family who own Habesha restaurant.

South African cuisine can also be found in many restaurants in Soweto. A newly opened cafe in Protea North, Kofifi Cafe, serves phutu and amasi which is a traditional South African staple.

Africa Day can also be celebrated by simply wearing traditional attire and learning about other African cultures as this will help breed unity.

The AU has 55 member states and is currently led by Chad politician Moussa Faki follow Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma’s tenure as the first female chairperson in the history of the AU.
