Dhelmon ‘Lante’ Elie (16), has a passion for everything art related. This includes visual art and performance art. The teenager is currently completing his grade 11 at Eldorado Park Secondary School. His mother, Sonia said, “Dhelmon has always loved drawing. He started drawing at only two years old.”
The budding artist spends much of his time with a pencil and paper. He believes that drawing helps him escape reality and provides him with a sense of contentment.
He said, “Drawing and painting require patience, so I’ve mastered being patient. I am more focused because of my art.

“My school work has improved because my art has taught me how to be disciplined. Drawing uplifts me and allows me to express myself. Every drawing and painting is a piece of me.”
The youngster has not received any formal training and, according to mom Sonia, he only attended a few classes at the Randburg Art Institution.
“He only attended a few classes, but his artwork has improved so much. It’s like he’s been at the school for years. His work truly is remarkable,” said the proud mother.
Elie said that he has noticed that some of the youth in Eldorado Park have no direction and he wants that to change.
“I want to inspire my peers. I want to show them the importance of following your dreams and I want to encourage them not to be afraid of being different,” he said.
The young artist wants to pursue a career in the art once he has completed high school “I want to go to university and major in fine art,” said Dhelmon. He also hopes to teach youngsters in his community everything that he has learned about visual art.
His mother added, “I am so proud of my son. His talent is God-given. I believe he will be one of the best artists of his time. He is my Picasso.”
