EMS honours learners from all city regions through the SERTT programme

Be fire wise this winter.

The City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services (EMS) honoured learners from all seven regions in Johannesburg who participated in the Schools Emergency Response Teams Training programme which seeks to create safer schools and communities, ensure maximum community outreach programmes and promote safety.

EMS is committed to providing a sustainable emergency service to all the citizens of Joburg. From Soweto and Joburg, they awarded 13 schools that have been participating in the programme, including schools in Soweto.

This programme has been an initiative by the City of Johannesburg EMS to build resilient communities which are capable of dealing with any emergencies which might occur not only in the Schools environment but also in their communities, initiated by the dedicated public education officers from the Public Information Education and Relations (PIER).

Schools Emergency Response Teams Safety Champions were given an opportunity to advise the acting chief of EMS, Mhlengi Makhubalo on what it is that he could introduce to further improve safety issues within the schooling environment.

Ayanda Radebe said, “Safety measures need to be in place more safety posters, education talks along with demonstrations and more fire extinguishers.”

The Director of ProActive Services and Public Education, Arthur Mqwa who heads the department which is responsible for conducting the Schools Emergency Response Teams Training encouraged the learners to take Emergency Services as a career choice when they finish their studies.

Gauteng Department of Education director, Solly Mavhunga urged EMS to continue with the Schools Emergency Response Teams Training Programme to all the Schools and to extend it to all the teachers in all the schools within the City of Johannesburg.

City of Johannesburg EMS Spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi said, “This programme which has targeted Grade 10 and 11 learners has been an excellent vehicle for the City of Johannesburg’s Emergency Management Services to use their core competency in emergency and safety to direct the learners away from illegal and harmful activities also teaching them about skills in a profession they may wish to pursue in future.”

“This programme comes at a time when the winter season is upon us as the City and many communities, especially our informal settlements throughout, are vulnerable to fire incidents, with the basic training they have acquired during this training programme, they will be able to deal with emergency situations at school and in their homes.”
