The Elsie Ngidi SGB pleads with community for help to make the school safer

With winter fast approaching, the broken windows means that learners will suffer from the cold

The Elsie Ngidi Primary School School Governing Body (SGB)  in Chiawelo is crying foul about the conditions at the school. According to SGB member, Ntombi Masuku, the school is in need of serious maintenance to ensure safety of the learners. She said the school infrastructure is damaged and in need of serious attention.

“The school has been in existence for many years and some things are beginning to get damaged and need to be fixed for the sake of the children. “One of the most  important things which need attention include the school’s toilets. “There are leaking pipes and the toilets are not flushing. “The other serious issue is the  taps. “We have only a few functioning taps and the rest are damaged,” said Masuku.

Michael Nyathi and Nombi Masuku are concerned about the deteriorating infrastructure at the school.

She said some of the windows were broken which means that learners will be exposed to the extreme cold expected this winter. Another SGB member, Michael Nyathi said the school’s wall is damaged which means that anyone can gain entry to the school and make off with much-needed teaching resources like the computers.

“We also need fire extinguishers at the school. “We need sponsorship to get the school maintained and any assistance  would be greatly appreciated,” said Nyathi. He said they have been trying to get help from different sectors, but thus far their efforts have proven futile.

The SGB are appealing to the community to help with upgrades at the school.

The SGB is a statutory body of parents, educators, non-teaching staff and learners from Grade Eight who seek to work together to promote the well-being and effectiveness of the school community and thereby improve learning and teaching. The body strives to create a trust relationship with the school.
