It’s kick-off for the annual Steven Pienaar Community Cup!

Teams from all over will be pitting their skills against each other in hopes of walking away as champions

It is that time of the year again when many footballers showcase their skills and team spirit on the Westbury soccer grounds. If you do not quite know what we are talking about, we are talking about the annual Steven Pienaar Community Cup.

The tournament began for the junior and the super league on the weekend of May 12. Many spectators watched the talented players come together to participate and Martin Bouwers was there to capture every moment.

According to Reidwan Sallie, chairman of the Jowest Local Football Association, this year there are 135 teams  participating in the tournament and only sixteen of these teams fall in the super league.

Last year, the super league tournament was won by Maraisburg Sundowns and they will be defending their title in this year’s tournament. In next week’s issue we will focus more on the junior league.

“The first week of the tournament was a bit crazy, we had lots of teams and lots of round-robin games but everything went off well,” said Sallie. The tournament is fixed on a round-robin with the U19, U13, U11 and the ladies teams all part of the tournament.

When asked what the prizes were, the chairman said that the prize money is still to be announced. For the next few weeks, teams will be fiercely battling it out for a position in the finals which will take place on June 17. The open tournament is yet to start and that too, will be covered.
