‘Aunty Florence’ dishes up for the elderly

Honouring the gatekeepers.

Thusa Bantwana, a non-governmental organisation started by Florence Steenkamp, who is known in the community as ‘Aunty Florence’ hosted a Mother’s Day lunch at the Albertus Pop Centre in Extension Seven on May 10 to celebrate the elderly in the Eldorado Park community.

The aim of the celebration was to make the seniors feel special as Mother’s Day is regarded as a special occasion.

“I decided to host this lunch because the elderly are so dear to my heart, all of them are my mommies. Most of these mommies won’t be spending this special day with their families so I wanted to make them feel special and wanted,” said Steenkamp.

The hall was laid out beautifully and seats were allocated to every single person who attended. The programme started off with an opening prayer after which councillor Fazel Jaffer addressed the women and wished them a happy Mother’s Day.

Lunch was served at 1 pm and the guests of honour were left to mingle and get to know one another.

Two DJ’s were in attendance and dedicated their afternoon to entertaining the mothers with music they enjoyed when they were younger. Those who were fit enough danced until they couldn’t anymore.

The women appreciated being honoured at the luncheon.

“It’s nice to be in a different environment for a change. I feel so spoiled today,” said Joanne Watts, a 78-year-old grandmother who attended the event.

Gifts were prepared and given to each guest who attended. Inside the gift bags were supplies to treat the mothers.

“The lunch was a success. I am very happy with how it turned it. Thank you to all my sponsors, I really appreciate all the help I received,” said Steenkamp.
