Housing tensions reach boiling point in Eldorado Park

Vacant houses illegally invaded.

Incomplete RDP houses are being occupied by individuals who have been waiting for housing for a few years now. According to a few illegal occupants who moved into the Klipspruit Extension 11 RDP houses, the half-finished houses have been vacant for over a year now.

“We decided to move in because these houses have been empty for too long, and nyaope boys were stealing the roofs and door frames.” said one the illegal invaders.

According to Peter Rafferty and DA Member of the Provincial Legislature, Makashule Gana, there has been a dispute between the contractor and the City of Johannesburg.

The matter has been taken to court which has caused delays in completing the project. A meeting was held with officials on May 3rd to discuss a way forward.

Rafferty said that the incomplete structures have become a haven for criminals. The illegal invaders have marked the houses with their names and some have started putting up their own doors and closing the window frames with cardboard and sheets.

“We want action. We have been waiting too long and we are not afraid to take action. We have been calm for too long.” said the illegal invaders.

The RDP housing dispute is not linked to the protest that took place in Eldorado Park recently. However, invaders are threatening to take action if the dispute is not settled soon.
