The elderly celebrated at Mother’s Day lunch

Most of these mommies won't be spending mothers day with their families so I wanted to make them feel special and wanted

Thusa Bantwana, an NGO started by Florence Steenkamp who is known in the community as “Aunty Florence” hosted a mothers day lunch at the POP Centre in Extension Seven on Friday 10 May 2018 to celebrate the elderly in the Eldorado Park community.

The aim of the celebration was to make the elderly ladies feel special as mothers day is a special occasion. “I decided to host this lunch because the elderly are so dear to my heart, all of them are my mommies,” said Florence Steenkamp.

She added: “Most of these mommies won’t be spending mothers day with their families so I wanted to make them feel special and wanted.”

The hall was laid out beautifully and seats were allocated for every single person who attended.

The programme started off with an opening prayer after which Councillor Fazel Jaffer addressed the ladies and wished them a happy mother’s day.

Lunch was served at around 1 o’clock and the guests of honor were left to mingle and got to know one another.

Sebastian Argues and Vinno Malgas who were the DJ’s at the event.

Two DJ’s were in attendance and dedicated their afternoon to entertaining the elderly with music they listened to when they were younger. Those who were fit enough danced until they couldn’t anymore. “Its nice to be in a different environment for a change. I feel so spoiled today,” said Joanne Wats, a 78- year- old grandmother who attended the event.

Gifts were prepared and given to each and every guest who attended. Inside the gift bags were supplies to treat the “mommies”.
