WATCH: Genre legends tell the story of Kwaito

Kwaito will never die.

The story of Kwaito was articulately narrated from its birth by those who participated in its inception and according to Nomasonto Maswanganyi aka Mshoza the renowned queen of Kwaito, Kwaito is a lifestyle above just being a genre of music, and if it died then our nation might as well have died a long time ago along with it and gone to the US.

The event that was hosted by Innovating Kasi Organisations (IKO) was hugely supported by the Kwaito nation, both the listeners and the creators of the music like Blonde Makhene, Lindelani Mkhize and Eugene Mthethwa who told the story of how Kwaito was born.

One of the organisers from IKO, Mxolisi Phiri was enthused to welcome the guests in the event and said how they will continue advocating for local talent’s recognition.

Mthethwa said, “Kwaito is a culture, an attitude and our Kwaito legends have made their mark. We want to tell our story precisely the way we witnessed it so that no one will come up and miss tell it. We want to show the authenticity of Kwaito.”

Diepkloof Community Hall was filled as usual and the old Kwaito jams were rotated and one could swear that IKO in association with the Department of Arts and Culture held a Soweto Party when everyone delighted and danced to songs by Trompies, Doc Shebeleza, whose real name is Victor Bogopane to mention a few esteemed Kwaito legends who were also present at the community hall.

Mthethwa narrated the fact that Kwaito began in Meadowlands aka Ndofaya, Diepkloof aka kloovas and Zola-Mndeni as a lifestyle expressed in fashion, music and the slang.

Mshoza explained how she never herself lived in Zola, but hung out often with hustlers like Mzambiya from Zola trying to break in the game.

Khayelihle Zulu, Mbali Gumede, and Xoliwe Zulu delight in local music.

Mshoza was born in Baragwanath, bred in Ndofaya and spent some time in Green Village and Protea, she said, “Zola helped my career.”

Hlaudi Motsoeneng the former COO for SABC was at the event as well with Oskido.
