Sports Trust and Nedbank open R1,2 million multipurpose sports court

New multipurpose court for Aubrey Modiba.

The Sports Trust and Nedbank have officially opened the new R1,2 million multipurpose sports court at Makgefola Primary School.

The Nedbank Sport Affinity is the main funder of this court, which is fittingly being placed at the primary school previously attended by Bafana Bafana and SuperSport United soccer star, Aubrey Modiba.

Modiba’s talent was nurtured from a young age at this school and recognised during Nedbank’s Ke Yona annual team search. He said that this gave him the platform to show the country his talent and helped him get to where he is today.

‘Having high-achieving role models that come from your community is the best way to inspire young people to achieve their potential.

“This gift of a multipurpose sports court has fallen on fertile soil and it will be used to the maximum,” said the school principal, Maria Makgoba.

The school, which was established in 1980 and has 462 learners, will share the facility with its neighbouring schools and communities for tournaments, competitions, events, wellness days and sports-related activities.

Makgoba said that exposure to the sport from primary-school level is essential to holistic learner development. ‘It helps learners to develop strong self-discipline, values, and morals; to control their temper; to think about others and develop a sense of team spirit, to understand the importance of respecting rules and honouring responsibilities; and to appreciate that hard work is one of the main keys to success.’

Tobie Badenhorst of Nedbank said it is because of the extraordinary role and power of sport in the mental and physical development of children that Nedbank partners with The Sports Trust to ensure excellence through sports from a young age.

The multipurpose sports court is part of the Nedbank Sport and Education Development Programme launched in 2010 in partnership with The Sports Trust.

Other sporting heroes who attended Makgefola Primary include soccer stars Neo Modiba (Maritzburg United), David Mashaphu (Polokwane City), Mboke Mashaphu (Baroka FC) and Sipho Khumalo.

Netball stars include Phindile Mogano, a University of Limpopo team member, who is also currently a trainer and coach at Makgefola Primary School; and Grade 8 athlete France Masetla, who is excelling at district, provincial and national schools levels.

Two learners have been admitted to schools of excellence. Tokollo Modiba is in grade 9 at the School of Excellence in Auckland Park, Johannesburg; and Mahlokwa Mphekgoane is in grade 8 at the Transnet School of Excellence.
