City Parks also visited the Horseshoe Retirement Village and did the same job there for the seniors.

In January, an article was published about the neglect of the retirement villages in Riverlea. This goes after years of the seniors complaining about the City of Johannesburg (COJ) involvement in the maintenance and security of the property and surrounding grounds.

The secretary of the Riverlea Retirement Village, Alan Thompson even went as far as writing to the Mayor.

In Thompson’s letter, he spoke about how their grass hasn’t been cut since last February and how residents are now taking it into their own hands by hiring people to cut the grass surrounding their homes.

“Now the other day there were guys who came to cut our grass. Five residents had to club together to pay the men R260 for cutting our grass,” said Thompson.

After the article, a few residents from the area visited the village in the interest of assisting the seniors. On April 25, City Parks also stepped in to assist the seniors. City Parks visited the retirement village to cut the grass after a year of neglect.

According to Thompson, the workers who came out were very efficient.

“They came and did a very good job with the cutting of the grass and the removing of the cut grass. Musi and his team were all done by 2 pm and we are very grateful to them,” said Thompson.

The village now looks neat and it is no longer dangerous for the seniors to step outside their homes as mentioned in the past that long grass became a safety hazard as it was always wet and slippery after the morning dew settled on it.

Many seniors on the premises looked very happy to see how beautiful their yards looked. City Parks also visited the Horseshoe Retirement Village and did the same job there for the seniors.

The area around the Lapa which is used for meetings and gatherings looks very neat.
