Meet Maximo Anthoine, an exchange student from Switzerland

Love sees no skin colour.

Maximo Anthoine from Switzerland could not choose any other moniker during his stay in Soweto than Thando, which means love.

Maximo Anthoine is an Exchange Student from overseas and already considers the family he currently lives with, in Orlando as his own family. One of his projects required him to attend one of the high schools in South Africa for ten months.

He has been doing Grade 10 in Fons Luminis for the last eight months and only has two months to go in experience he has described as nothing but incredible.

Anthoine said, “The people here are so friendly and positive, it has been really awesome for me here because I am from a village like a place where I am not used to seeing such a repertoire of people at once and so much energy.”

Speaking about the education he has encountered at Fons Luminis he explained how he reckoned that the education from Switzerland was slightly ahead of the education system in SA because for one, in his home country they have 15 grades while in South Africa there are only 12 grades.

Maximo was walking back to what he calls his current home with Akhona Kwatshana who he considers his brother.

Kwatshana said, “The experience of having Thando has helped me a lot with my school work and has helped me understand more of my school work.”

Anna Ndulula whose house Maximo has been living in all the time he has been in the country expressed her gladness about the young man’s character and attitude, she said, “He is a wonderful boy who respects and loves people. Even the community has grown used to him as Thando.”

Ndulula said that after he leaves, which is in the next two months, she would miss him dearly because she does not treat him like a stranger but like one of her own children as well.

Thando said, “I have not seen any racism so far, but have sensed the tension between people with different skin colour.”
