‘A topic without any real solutions’

Addressing the drug issue in Jabulani.

The Ward 46 community hosted a community consultation meeting at Siyavuma Primary School last week Wednesday. Even though the meeting started late, important matters were addressed with particular reference to the drug issue and the crime issue in the community.

Directing the meeting was representatives from the Jabulani Police Station with the JMPD, the CPF and the Local Drug Action Committee who all addressed issues from their relevant departments.

Officer Mthimkhulu from the JMPD explained the need for bylaws such and the importance of following them.

“We stress that we should try and make sure that our children are home before dark. The JMPD has been mandated to make sure that citizens follow bylaw, so when people are at a park drinking alcohol, JMPD has the right to arrest such people for alcohol drinking or littering.

“The JMPD can also instruct people to leave a park if it is too late and that is because we are trying to reduce crime, especially in parks,” said Mthimkhulu.

On the issue of substance abuse, Ntombi from LDAC highlighted that in most cases parents would know if their child smokes, thus one of the important steps to changing substance abuse starts at home.

“In most cases, a parent would know if their child is a smoker and in our communities, we know very well who are people selling drugs.

“The sad part is that sometimes all of this may be triggered by things at home so for an example, you would find that an uncle at the house is a smoker and they smoke in front of children or they send young children to buy cigarettes at a shop or you would find that the granny smokes snuff,” said Ntombi Dlamini.
