Former mayor shares pearls of wisdom

Learning from our predecessors helps to warn us about obstacles ahead.

Learning from our predecessors helps to warn us about obstacles ahead. It is because of this concern that Member of the Executive Committee (MEC) for finance, councillor Funzela Ngobeni paid a visit to former Dobsonville mayor Steve Nkatlho at his home.

MEC Ngobeni said the visit to the former mayor was a way of paying tribute and acknowledging the role he played in the development of the township.

Ngobeni said, “The visit is also about engaging with the former mayor and learning from his wisdom. We also had the opportunity to meet with former independent councillor candidate, Japhta Lekgetho.

“He won Ward 47 twice in a row in the previous local elections. Lekgetho was a Ward 47 councillor for two terms and won the ward as an independent councillor candidate. He is also the nephew of the former mayor.”

He said that the DA’s visit was aimed at finding ways of working together and sharing information. Ngobeni said they would appreciate it if councillor Lekgetho could impart his political wisdom to the DA members at a grassroots level.

He was quick to acknowledge Lekgetho’s winning the battle for the ward twice in succession against the ANC and DA candidates.

Ngobeni said Lekgetho won the Ward 47 without the financial backing enjoyed by both parties, which is an incredible achievement.

He added that the feat showed Lekgetho’s political shrewdness which he added was a desirable quality in DA’s attempts to unseat the ANC.

“Nkatlho and Lekgetho have done a lot for the City of Johannesburg in the past and we should acknowledge them.”

They were both invited to attend the City of Johannesburg’s budget speech to be presented on May 2. They also had an opportunity to meet City of Joburg mayor, Herman Mashaba.

Nkatlho and Lekgetho lauded the MEC’s efforts and for engaging with them on issues concerning the City of Johannesburg.
