Service delivery protests halt traffic in Eldos and Soweto

Protest action interrupts the flow of cars on major routes.

Planned protest action by the Soweto Action Committee, Bahlali base Freedom Park, the Lehae Landless Movement and the Soweto RDP Forum targeting a number of key roads started this morning between 3 and 4 am.

The protesters placed burning tyres along Union Road in Eldorado Park and planned to disrupt traffic along Impala, Chris Hani, Ben Naude Roads which are the main routes used by taxis, buses and private vehicles to get to places of employment.

JMPD spokesperson, Wayne Minnaar has confirmed that the N12 from Lenasia to Freedom Park was blocked off earlier this morning, the debris has largely been cleared and the bottleneck on the N12 is slowly easing.

Reports indicate that the protest action was initiated by residents in these areas who demand housing and better delivery of basic services like water and the provision of electricity.

Updates to follow as we monitor the situation.
