VoxPoP: The significance of International Workers’ Day

May Day 2018.

International Workers’ Day, also known as May Day, is a celebration of labourers and is celebrated in many parts of the world. The holiday was formally recognised as an event in 1891. People would celebrate this day by organising street demonstrations and marches.

This public holiday is an affirmation to the difficult battles that workers in the country endured. But still, there’s an outcry due to lack of employment opportunities – some claim that government isn’t doing enough to influence change in the lives of many struggle families in the country. Which begs the question, is government really not doing enough?

We interviewed some people as means of delving a bit of information to attain youth people’s understanding regarding this crucial topic of unemployment.

Khehla Majola believes that government requires assistance from the private sector to curb or lessen the high rate of unemployment. And the private sector would be key towards creating the much-needed jobs.

Matshowana Molakeng says, “The rate of unemployment can be reduced if skills development programmes are prioritised by all municipal stakeholders or government entities such as City Year, National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), Harambee, Tshepo 1 Million and businesses, including participation by civil society.

“It is highly impossible for unemployment to be tackled in a year, therefore a long-term strategy should be adopted to deal with such a conundrum,” said Molakeng.

It’s no secret that education is in fact key to effectuate change in society and to bolster one’s economic background, but there are still unemployed graduates.

Qualified beauty therapist, Tshepiso Moatshe has been job hunting for almost two years. She has applied for many jobs but with no luck.

It is public knowledge that there are many jobless young people out there in our communities. And based on their arguments, it is clear that International Workers’ Day will be hard to celebrate or to sense its significance when you’re without a job.

Happy International Workers’ Day everyone!!
