What are my options if I can no longer afford my monthly vehicle payments?

Do you remember how you felt the day you took your vehicle for its first spin?

Do you remember how you felt the day you took your vehicle for its first spin?

And when you showed it off to your friends and family, or your other half? For many of us, the euphoria of buying our own vehicle is similar to the beginning of a relationship. It is full of exciting firsts and milestones.

We know that we will be together for quite some time to come – that is, at least as long as it takes to pay the vehicle off, but hopefully even longer. We name them, and even talk to them and spend hours making sure they look their best.

They come through for us when we need to get somewhere in a hurry, or just take a lazy Sunday drive. Vehicles certainly are entrenched in our daily lives.

This makes it understandably heart-breaking if that relationship has to prematurely end. Perhaps a change in life circumstances which means that you are no longer able to afford your monthly repayments.

The truth is that this is an increasingly unfortunate reality for many South Africans. The rising cost of living exacerbated by petrol price hikes, the VAT increase and other often unforeseen expenses, sees many of us finding our wallets and bank accounts stretched beyond the limit.

Often these changing circumstances influenced by economic and political factors forces consumers to reconsider their spending choices.  Often, however, these choices lead to consumers electing to miss or even not pay their monthly vehicle instalments.

Here are some top tips prepared by Charl Potgieter, Head of Personal Markets at Absa on the options you can consider if you find you can no longer afford your monthly vehicle instalment:

None of us ever want to find ourselves in a tight financial situation where we can’t pay our monthly vehicle instalments – but sometimes this happens and it is important to remember not to panic and to reach out for help.

“It isn’t often that there isn’t a solution – especially if you collaborate with the people that deal with these matters on a daily basis. Industry leaders like your bank will work with you to come to an arrangement that will help you survive tough times,” concludes Potgieter.
