WATCH: Free brass music lessons at Bapedi Primary School

#Listen: Future professional music composers.

Life goes on with music for the children of Diepkloof who are well on their way to becoming professional music composers because of the class that offers them free brass music lessons at Bapedi Primary School, both theoretically and practically.

The children can now read and interpret the music notes but still have to share the limited amount of instruments. This does not sit very well with the teacher and director of the school, Mahulwana Kgopa who explained that the children sharing the mouthpieces is not ideal.

Mahulwana said, “We are in dire need of instruments for the class because we have witnessed how the music here is able to keep them away from the streets while improving their characters.”

Kgopa grew up in Diepkloof but now lives in Benoni and he saw the need for brass music in Diepkloof and instead of wishing, he started teaching a small group of students music which, due to its popularity has grown to two classes.

He now has two ladies helping him. Lesedi Budaza one of Kgopa’s assistant teachers has been active in encouraging parents to help with the getting more musical instruments.

“Being here is really helpful to the children who learn the theory and the foundation of music. We are willing to even accept more children in our classes to keep them away from the corrupted trends of the streets,” said Budaza.

Ofentse Mokgoatsane learned to play the trombone in the class in 2016 and now plays with ease.

Mokgoatsane said, “At first, handling the trombone was intimidating, but the teacher assured me that nothing is impossible and that life goes on with music.”

Mahulwana said that the other parents do purchase instruments for their children like Moloko Machaka who attends the class with her brother Musa Machaka who plays the trombone, Mahulwana said, “We are pleading with the parents at home who even might have old brass instruments to bring them to Bapedi Primary School so that the children can learn and progress.”
