The year of satisfaction for 80-year-olds

80 is the age of grace and satisfaction prosperity.

Like the name suggests, the Johannesburg Retired Teachers Association (JORETA) is a haven for retired teachers. They honoured some of their members who have reached the age of 80, which they considered ‘the year of satisfaction’.

The retired teachers who were honoured as octogenarians are aged 80 -89 years old and they received praise for reaching this milestone and having taught and served in their communities.

The chairman of the association, Fanyana Mazibuko said the event was a platform where teachers get honoured, both the living and the ones who have passed.

“The life of the people we were celebrating was an example of how leading a good and respectful life leads to a prosperous life.”

Pastor Matshepo Radebe stood up and went to the front with a hymn and she was to pray for the ones who have passed away including the former first wife, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, Pastor Radebe said, “Those who put their trust in God will never be disappointed.”

The Deputy Chairperson of the association that has just returned from a vacation in the Portuguese Island, Dan Lefoka looked dazzling in his white tuxedo as he kept on leading the choir in different hymns.

He advised the retired teachers and the teachers that would retire to learn the constitutions of any organisations they would be part of.

Lefoka said, “Teachers end up having to multitask and close many gaps, we should not stop teaching and helping even though we may have retired.”

The octogenarians who were honoured were also given the chance to share their secrets to living a longer life, Victoria Mkhize said, “We must pray always and take care of one another and never forget to respect all elders.”

Pastor Thebeetsile Bogatsu quoted Psalms 40 from the Bible and closed the ceremony by saying, “Reaching the age of 80 is a sign of prosperity.”
