Chess players to represent SA in India and Kenya

After the Knight Riders Chess Club is proud to announce that two of is chess players will be representing the SA.

After the Knight Riders Chess Club from Diepkloof successfully hosted its second chess tournament at the Diepkloof Community Hall, two young players from the club went to participate in the South African Junior Closed Chess Championships and qualified to represent SA in India.

Nosipho Chauke (7) went to the junior closed championships with Bernet George (15) who played intensely in the under 18 division to represent the club while Chauke participated in the U8 division.



The coach for the chess club, Linda Makhubela was excited about the two player’s performance who have both qualified to go and represent their club and the whole country in India and Kenya, respectively.

Makhubela said, “The youth should join the sport that is not only fun but beneficial as well in terms of improving cognitive skills.”

Chauke qualified to represent South Africa in the African Junior Chess Championship that will be held in Kenya and for the Commonwealth Chess Championships that will be held in India.



George, on the other hand, qualified to represent South Africa in the Commonwealth, Africa Youth, and u16’s Olympiads.

An organisation called Move for Life helped in ensuring that the 2nd tournament was smoothly run and administered, Teddy Phakathi from the organisation spoke about how their organisation promotes life skills, mathematics, and science through chess.


Phakathi said, “Move for Life caters for kids in chess, and we help so we can expose the young children to chess and test their skills to determine whether they would be able to compete at national level.”



Makhubela said, “Nosipho is the only black girl in the U8 Girl’s section, and we need a sponsor to help the two young chess players achieve their goals.”
