DA calls on cops to help in schools

DA urges SAPS to prioritise safety in schools.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) visited the Eldorado Park Police Station on Tuesday, April 10 while conducting their Safe School campaign in response to the rising violence and drug use in schools.

According to the party, police should play a more prominent role in combating these issues and ensuring safety within our schools.

Eldorado Park has, over the years, become infamous as a result of the widespread drug use and the DA wants to become more involved in the battle to eradicate these ills from our school.

According to a statement released by the DA, “The South African Police Service (SAPS) is failing to tackle this growing problem.”

The Eldorado Park SAPS disagrees with this perception as they have been working with the Yellow Ribbon Foundation (YRF) in an effort to erase this plague from our schools. Many learners have been accepted at YRF as a means of tackling the problem.

The press release reads: “The Eldorado SAPS made 2229 arrests for drug-related crimes from April 1, 2017, to March 31, which is 50 percent of the drug arrests made in the entire Gauteng province during that period.”

Michele Clarke from the DA said, “While we applaud the number of arrests made, this statistic indicates that the area is drug-infested and the SAPS are struggling in their attempts to effectively eradicate the drug problem.

“This already under-resourced and under-staffed police station has 29 schools in the precinct of which eight high schools are facing a serious drug problem.”

Although the schools are facing high drug problems there are methods put in place to rehabilitate the learners. On the contrary, it has to be a conscious decision of the learner to not smoke weed or do drugs, if they choose not to, then all the rehabilitation in the world will not work.
