The congregation of a church in Claremont planned to attend church on Easter Sunday, but to their demise, they found that the church had been broken into. The incident happened during the night of March 31 when the Chubb Security Company detected activity at the church.

“They first cut the power and it looked like they waited because when the Chubb securities patrolled, the property was okay,” explained a member of the church’s council Claude le Roux.

All kitchen appliances and sound instruments have been stolen. The kitchen appliances were used for the feeding scheme to feed the children of Claremont.

The feeding scheme usually runs every Wednesday and Thursday where the church feeds about a hundred children. The thieves got away with all the food-stuff, fridge, freezer, microwave, gas stove and so forth.

The sound equipment which includes Alto mixing desk, Tama drum kit, Shure mics, sound snake speakers and speaker monitors were also stolen.

“The security has a feeling that the suspects knew their way around the church, they even crawled into a room to pull out the alarm system out. I don’t know if they were disturbed or not but they had our chairs packed up and ready to go, but they ended leaving it in the church,” said le Roux.

According to le Roux, a case of theft has been opened at the Sophiatown Police Station and they are currently investigating the break-in.

Claude le Roux would like the public to contact him if you see any of the equipment being sold in our community. The number is 078 921 2260.
