Thousands gathered at Orlando Stadium to pay tribute to Mother of the nation.

The memorial service of the late struggle stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela kicked off at Orlando Stadium this morning.

Thousands of South Africans from all walks of life are joined by government leaders and diplomats from other countries in celebrating the life of Mama Winnie.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Chief Ngangomhlaba Matanzima said, “Mama Winnie left them and the country unexpectedly.”

The chief went on to praise the late struggle stalwart for her contribution to the struggle.

“She did not only contribute to the liberation of this country, but she played an active role in resolving issues even at home. That is why, I say, she was a chief negotiator,” said Matanzima.

A fellow veteran in the struggle who was once jailed with Mama Winnie, Rita Ndzanga also paid tribute.

“Even though it was difficult, she always believed that the apartheid regime would be defeated. She played a huge role in fighting the unjust pass laws as well,” said Ndzanga.

People are still coming in from across the province and other parts of the country. Economic Freedom Fighters [EFF] have painted a section of the stadium red. Deputy president David Mabuza is expected to deliver the keynote address later today.
